Are fibroids inherited? If so, what can I do to lessen my chances?

Are fibroids inherited? If so, what can I do to lessen my chances?

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths (tumors) in the uterus which can be very small or grow quite large. We do not know a whole lot about what causes fibroids, but they are not inherited. Researchers are focusing on a number of possible causes and risk factors, including smoking, obesity and many others.

Fibroids are extremely common, but they are not well-enough understood to make recommendations for prevention. Certainly, if you smoke you should quit. One study is currently investigating whether soybeans, with all their "phytoestrogens" may be beneficial for fibroids. We hope future research will bring more information about this condition.

Meanwhile, lead a healthy lifestyle, with exercise and a balanced diet, and do not worry about whether you will develop fibroids some day. If it is any comfort, the majority of women with fibroids experience few or no symptoms whatsoever. Fibroids frequently shrink or disappear after menopause.
